When Passion Needs a Push

Like many young people with big dreams, Matthew Howell knew what he wanted to do, but didn’t know how to get there. With a passion for cooking and some informal experience behind him, Matthew was eager to begin his career in hospitality.

However, without formal training or a clear pathway into the industry, he found it difficult to secure a role. The lack of structure, support, and genuine opportunities to demonstrate himself made his dream of becoming a chef feel out of reach.

A Recipe for Progress

That all changed when Matthew enrolled in our Path 2 Apprenticeships programme at Workpays.

Through a mixture of employability training, personalised guidance, and real-world experience, Matthew gained the tools he needed to move forward. He was assigned a place at The Town Crier, where he assisted with live kitchen service and took part in hands-on food preparation, gaining experience into the fast-paced hospitality industry he always wanted to be part of.

Workpays didn’t just stop at skills. To ensure Matthew could get to work reliably, we also provided an electric bike, removing any transport barriers that could have held him back.

After preparing for an interview with the Head Chef, Matthew secured a trial shift, which led to him landing an apprenticeship as a chef.

Matthew is now thriving in his new role. He’s gaining practical skills, earning while learning, and growing in confidence every day. His employer has praised his positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to improve—calling him a real asset to the team.
