Starting your own business may seem like an impossible dream, but with the right support, it can become a reality. That’s exactly what happened for Lora, the founder of VersaKraft Art, who used the Restart Programme and Workpays to turn her passion for personalised gifts into a successful business.

Finding the Right Path

Lora found herself in a tough spot after enrolling in the Restart Programme at her local job centre. With her youngest son turning three, she needed to return to work but struggled to find a role that fit her circumstances.

During her first meeting with her Employment Coach Darren, she was asked a simple but powerful question: “What’s your dream job?” Lora shared her passion for creating personalised gifts and clothing, which she had always dreamed of turning into a business. To her surprise, Darren encouraged her to pursue it.

“I never imagined it could actually happen,” Lora admits. “Darren asked me to list the equipment I needed, and within 10 days, I had everything delivered to start my business.”

Launching VersaKraft Art

Lora received a DTF printer and apparel stock through Workpays, allowing her to start creating and selling custom clothing and items like mugs, tumblers, glass chopping boards, and baby bodysuits. VersaKraft Art, which was inspired by the initials of her children, was then launched on Etsy.

The journey wasn’t easy, with a defective printer and the time zone differences delaying manufacturing production, but Lora’s determination combined with Darren’s support helped her solve the problem. Workpays also provided additional support and assisted her in developing her own website, www.versakraft-art.com.

The Impact of Workpays and Restart

Lora’s experience with the Restart Programme has been life-changing. “Without Workpays, I wouldn’t have been able to afford the equipment to start my business. More importantly, I had someone who believed in me and gave me the confidence to make it happen.”

Darren has seen the impact of Restart on learners like Lora. “The biggest transformation is in their belief. Once they see what’s possible, they start to reconsider their future plans. It’s incredibly rewarding to see someone go from job-seeker to entrepreneur.”

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Lora’s advice to others considering self-employment is pretty straightforward: “Don’t be afraid to dream! With the right support, your business goals can become reality.”

If you’re on Universal Credit and looking to pursue self-employment, Workpays and the Restart Programme can provide the resources you need to succeed.

Lora’s story is proof that with the right mindset and support, anything is possible. Could you be the next success story?
