At Workpays, we believe that education, training, and employability support can change lives. This International Women’s Day, we’re celebrating the inspiring journeys of women who have transformed their careers through learning, resilience, and determination. One such woman is Nicole Thomas, an Engagement Broker at Workpays, whose story showcases the impact of personal growth, career progression, and the power of supporting others.
From Aviation to Employability Support: Nicole’s Career Journey
Nicole Thomas started her aviation career as a cabin crew, where she developed strong communication and people skills while working in a fast-paced environment. She chose to move into a more stable role after having her son, where she developed useful experience over a five-year period. However, Nicole wanted a role that matched her enthusiasm for assisting people in achieving their potential.
Her passion brought her to Workpays, where she found a role that allowed her to make a difference in people’s lives. Now working as an engagement broker, Nicole supports individuals in gaining new skills, boosting their confidence, and progressing in their careers. One of her proudest achievements has been helping to bring ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) to Derby, expanding opportunities for those who need it most.
Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Change
Nicole’s career transition came with challenges. Moving from aviation to a home-based role and entering a new industry felt intimidating. However, she relied on her transferable skills, communication, adaptability, and mentoring, to transition into this change successfully.
Her experience highlights the value of perseverance and self-confidence. By staying open to learning and embracing change, she was able to find a career that fulfilled her passion for making a difference.
Growth and Progression at Workpays
Nicole has embraced lifelong learning and growth since joining Workpays. Having earned an Information, Advice, and Guidance (IAG) qualification, she is now better equipped to assist people with their professional development. She is also pursuing a Level 3 apprenticeship as a Team Leader, acquiring critical leadership abilities that will help her pursue her goal of entering operations management.
Through Workpays, Nicole has developed professionally and gained the confidence to take on more responsibilities. She feels optimistic about her future with the company and appreciates the chances for growth and learning.
Advice for Women Looking to Progress
Nicole’s advice to other women looking to develop their careers is simple: believe in yourself and never stop learning.
“The journey isn’t always easy, but persistence and self-belief are key. Surround yourself with people who support and inspire you, seek out growth opportunities, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. That’s where the greatest growth happens.”
She also emphasises the importance of mentorship and networking, encouraging women to connect with those who can support them to advance in their careers.
The Importance of Women’s Progression in Education and Employment
Nicole believes that communities and societies as a whole benefit when women advance in their education and careers. Equal opportunities for women contribute to the development of more inclusive and diverse workplaces. Future generations will be inspired to dream big and realise their full potential if barriers are broken down and women are given the freedom to follow their dreams.
Celebrating International Women’s Day
Nicole views International Women’s Day as a celebration of women’s contribution to all aspects of life. It’s also a day to recognise the challenges that still exist and work towards achieving true equality.
“As a proud Black woman with Jamaican heritage, this day is about representation and uplifting women from all backgrounds. I’m passionate about motivating and supporting other women to grow, progress, and believe in themselves. International Women’s Day is a reminder that when we stand together and support each other, we break down barriers for future generations.”
Workpays’ commitment to empowering individuals extends beyond our learners; it is deeply rooted in our leadership as well. Anne, our Managing Director, reflects on the significance of International Women's Day and the continued work needed to drive equality in the workplace:
"I am proud that Workpays is a women-led business. International Women's Day reminds us of how much more work there is to do to ensure that there is full equality in pay, opportunity, and access to the best jobs. Workpays will continue to fight for the success of all our learners and participants."
