"The EHCP described one learner. The young man sitting in front of us was someone else entirely."

Kane's story highlights the importance of personalised learning support, and what can happen when education focuses on the individual, not just the paperwork.

When Kane first joined us, his Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) outlined a history of difficulties engaging with mainstream education. On paper, it painted a picture of a learner who had faced significant barriers and struggled to thrive within traditional educational settings.

However, when we met Kane, we saw far more than a list of challenges.

As an autistic learner, Kane had often felt that previous providers had not taken the time to understand him as an individual. He spoke openly about feeling unheard and unsupported, and about experiences where people appeared to focus on his difficulties rather than his potential.

"Before joining Workpays, I didn't have a very positive view of education. I felt that previous education providers didn't really understand me or take the time to listen to me. I had started to feel like education just wasn't for me."

We took a different approach.

Rather than making assumptions based on paperwork, we spent time getting to know Kane, listening to his experiences and understanding how he learned best. By adapting our delivery style, providing personalised learning support, tailored guidance, and creating an environment where he felt valued and encouraged, we were able to build both his skills and his confidence.

As Kane explains:

"Workpays actually listened to me. They took the time to understand me as a person, not just look at my paperwork or my EHCP and make assumptions. They supported me in a way that suited me and made me feel like they believed I could succeed. For the first time, I felt like someone was actually on my side."

Over time, Kane's engagement with learning grew significantly. Through hard work and determination, supported by personalised teaching and guidance, he successfully achieved his mathematics qualification, an important milestone in his autistic learner success story.

For Kane, that achievement meant much more than gaining a qualification.

"At one point, I didn't think I would be able to do it, so completing it showed me that I could achieve more than I thought. It gave me confidence to look at what I wanted to do next."

Today, Kane has progressed onto a college horticulture course, pursuing an area that genuinely interests him and offers exciting opportunities for his future. At one stage, he did not believe this pathway would be available to him.

"Completing my maths qualification helped me move forward and gave me the confidence to continue my education. Moving onto a horticulture course is something I am really proud of because, at one point, I didn't think that would even be an option for me. Now I am studying something I enjoy and working towards my future."

Kane describes Workpays as the best education provider he has worked with because we listened, understood his needs and believed in his ability to succeed. Even now, he still drops in from time to time to share updates on his progress, something that means a great deal to our team.

When asked what he would say to someone considering joining Workpays, Kane said:

"Workpays is different because they actually listen to you and take the time to understand you. Don't think you can't do something because of your past experiences. With the right support, you can achieve things you didn't think were possible."

Kane's autistic learner success story is a powerful reminder that learners are far more than the documents that accompany them. When education is built on understanding, encouragement and genuine belief in an individual's potential, remarkable things can happen.
