18th Edition Amendment 4: What's Changed and Do You Need to Requalify?

If you qualified under an earlier version of the 18th Edition, you may already be working to outdated standards without realising it. The 18th Edition Amendment 4 is the current version of BS 7671, and it brings changes that affect day-to-day work for electricians across the UK.
Here's what's changed, who needs to requalify, and how to get up to date quickly.
What Is the 18th Edition Amendment 4?
BS 7671 is the UK standard for electrical installations, more commonly known as the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations. Amendment 4 is the latest update to this standard, introducing revised requirements that reflect changes in technology, safety practice, and installation methods since the last update.
In short, Amendment 4 is not a new qualification. It is an update to the existing 18th Edition, and it is the version currently in effect.
Why Does This Matter for Your Work?
Working to an outdated version of the regulations can create real problems, both for compliance and for the work you're able to take on:
Scheme membership – many competent person schemes require evidence of the latest update
Tender eligibility – commercial and public sector contracts increasingly specify Amendment 4 as a requirement
Inspection and sign-off – work certified to outdated standards can be flagged during compliance checks
Client confidence – employers and clients expect electricians to be working to current standards
Do You Need to Requalify?
If your 18th Edition qualification predates Amendment 4, yes. This isn't a full requalification from scratch. It's a short update course that brings your existing knowledge in line with the current standard.
Most electricians who already hold an 18th Edition qualification can complete the update course in just 3 days.
How to Get Up to Date
Greenpays delivers City & Guilds accredited 18th Edition Amendment 4 training from our Derby Training Centre. The course takes 3 days, costs £245.30 (exc. VAT), and can be secured with a £50 deposit.
Whether you're updating your own qualification or arranging training for a team, staying current with the 18th Edition Amendment 4 protects your ability to work, bid, and sign off with confidence.
